Job Training - Give Yourself More Power In The Job Market
The recession of the late aughts ('07- present) has thrown millions of people out of work in areas of the economy which a decade ago would not have been considered vulnerable to an economic downturn. Those who could not take early retirement, or who did not have a fall back trade or profession to turn to have had to rely on career training. The question is: “Will this new area remain recession proof until I retire”. A daunting piece of crystal ball work to say the least. However, there are some clues one can use to make an “educated guess” when it comes to career training.
One of the topics seen in newspapers and magazines today are articles about how to handle the predicted influx of the Baby Boomer generation retirement corp when they hit in force in 2012. The medical profession becomes career training target number one. In addition to an interest in science, you can still find a role in the medical field as an office manager in a doctor's or dentist's office. Physical Therapists and exercise / aerobic instructors are also included in this area. Veterinary technicians and technologist are also touted as being a part of the new professions needing an influx of help in the coming years. The other profession is dental hygienists. Both of these areas will be positively affected by a large number of people with leisure time on their hands. These professions pay fairly well beyond the entry level salary levels. The range projected is from around $16,000 to $75,000. Keep in mind these salary averages may not be true in all areas of the country. And they are averages.
The other area of career training possibility is the area of computer technology. Computer technology is not a surprising area either considering how hungry our society is for instantaneous information. Computer career paths are in Network Systems and Data Communication Analysis as well as Software Engineers. These professions pay very well. Topping out in the mid-$90,000 a year range. Finally, another area of consideration is public servant in areas of law enforcement, fire fighter, or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Our society will always need people in these areas.
One of the ways a person can do their own research in the area of career training is to go to their local book store and surveying the magazines on the racks. Just getting an idea of what the “hot topics” are and trying to project what topic will be attractive as a profession in the future. An astute observer can see the next big area which will direct them to the general area of interest.
Most careers / professions are cyclical. That is they have peaks and valleys in their popularity and availability of employment. For example in the 1960's aeronautical engineering was a hot profession, but the 1980's an aeronautical engineer couldn't find a job. The secret to career training is try to find that niche which will survive the peaks and valleys of economic booms and busts. Until you have reached your retirement age, or are able to establish your own business.
